What is the unexpected gift of your kids’ feedback?

If you consider a growth mindset and lifelong learning as your core values, I think you’ll find this insight uplifting.

I came to realize that our kids are the ones who help us the most in becoming better at receiving feedback, which is key to any area we want to become better at.

Our kids’ feedback helps us to do so in three different ways:

  • by pushing us to step into the role of decoding the feedback. For example, when they say “I didn’t like it”, it could mean many things.

  • by getting to know how defensiveness shows up in us and how to work with it.

  • by providing many other opportunities to practice the skills needed to receive feedback in ways that advance our learning.

I provide more details here >> How do you become better at receiving feedback?

Developing these skills and understanding that I have a shared responsibility in decoding the feedback is liberating.

It helps me focus my learning efforts on what I CAN control – how I show up in life, at home, and beyond.

Becomers' weekly challenge - Leverage your kids' feedback for growth

Become better at receiving feedback:

  • Read: How do you become better at receiving feedback?

  • Reflect: what is the top skill you want to practice to become better at receiving feedback?

  • Reframe: this week, when your kids give you feedback, remind yourself that this is an opportunity for you to develop your skills in receiving feedback.

Parenting is a life-long learning journey in which we co-create a safe, trusted, resilient, caring, and loving connection with our kids and ourselves.

Only with our kids’ feedback, we can make the connection better, together. 💛

With care,
Liz
