What are your most important principles in teaching?

‘What are your most important principles in teaching?’ The USA’s teacher of the year was asked this question several decades ago.

‘Well, you test them when they come into school, and you figure out whether they are worthwhile. And if they are worthwhile, you really pay attention to them, and you don’t waste time on the ones that aren’t.’

Once upon a time, teachers were awarded for a philosophy that basically suggested that only some children could develop their abilities.

Once upon a time, the scientific community believed that the human brain couldn’t change.

It took several decades and courageous scientists, women and men, to challenge the status quo and prove that the human brain is adaptable.

We are fortunate to live in an era in which more and more educators approach their profession with science in mind and effective strategies to help kids to take their capabilities to the next level.

This post is not about judging the past. It’s about celebrating how far we have come.

I’m grateful for the scientists who have contributed to important breakthroughs that push humanity forward. I’m grateful for the educators, teachers and parents, who are willing to challenge their principles and change their practices. Who work hard to invent and discover new strategies to raise the future generations with the trust that we are all worthwhile and capable of making things better.
